Our first trip of the year was to Liverpool to celebrate BF’s birthday. Take a look at what we got up to!
Thursday 1st February
Food & Drink Dublin Airport
On the Thursday, after a customary airport wine, we boarded an evening flight out of Dublin with Ryanair and within an hour we were touching down in Liverpool John Lennon Airport. We jumped into a taxi and got to our hotel around 11 pm. We were staying at the Heywood House Hotel, a 4-star hotel in central Liverpool. It was such a great hotel; the staff were lovely and the ‘standard’ room we booked was massive! Although expensive for a 4-night stay it was cheaper than a lot of other places. Liverpool is generally an expensive city to stay in, but in my opinion, worth it. We were thinking of heading out for a drink or two but with what we had planned for the next day we decided to get an early night.

The next day was BF’s birthday and we had a fun-filled day planned but first off, breakfast! We went to this cute cafe called Moose Coffee. I ordered the french toast with bacon and BF got the biggest stack of pancakes I’ve ever seen! Coupled with coffee and orange juice we were fit for a nap once we were finished, or once we’d eaten as much food as humanly possible! We jumped into an uber and headed to Anfield for the stadium tour. BF was like a child at Christmas and I have to admit it was pretty cool. After wandering around the stadium, strolling through the player dressing rooms and taking photos of BF at every opportunity we headed to the boot room bar in Anfield to grab a drink. I was intrigued by the Liverpool Gin so I couldn’t resist a mid-morning Gin and Tonic.

Once we finished our drinks we jumped back into an Uber and headed to our next activity; Mini-golf, but with a twist. This 18-hole mini golf course also had a bar that served drinks before, after and most importantly while you were working your way around the course. It was so much fun and my favourite part of the trip. We did get a bit worse as the course went on. All the craft beer and cocktails definitely took their toll!
Ghetto Golf, Liverpool
Once we were done with mini-golf and well and truly feeling tipsy we wandered back to the hotel, stopping along the way to snap some Instagram worthy photos with a set of angel wings. Back at the hotel BF went for a quick nap while I got ready for dinner that night. We were hitting up TGIF, mainly for the cocktails but also for the good food. But first, a quick drink in the Alchemist. If you have not been to the Alchemist, in any of it’s UK locations you need to add it to the list. They have an extensive cocktail menu and incorporate bunsen burners, dry ice, washing up liquid and fire into their mixology. BF looked very confused when I got back to the table with smoke spurting out of my cocktail. We then headed to dinner and I ended up going with fajitas and sweet potato fries and they did not disappoint. Their strawberry margaritas were also pretty amazing. We then headed back to the Alchemist for another few cocktails but after the day’s activities, we could only manage one more before we decided to call it a night.

Saturday 3rd February
Coconut Porridge, Bills Liverpool
On the Saturday we woke up to a pretty wet and miserable Liverpool. But we wrapped up and headed over to Liverpool ONE for breakfast. We were hitting up Bills! I had been during my Greece/Leeds trip last year and I loved it so I just had to go again, and bring BF this time. I got the Coconut Porridge with the miserable morning that was in it, along with a flat white and an orange juice. BF got the pancakes with bacon and maple syrup. We were both in heaven! Once we were done with breakfast we headed over to Albert Dock to the Beatles Story. I wouldn’t consider myself a huge fan of the Beatles so I learned loads from the tour. It was definitely worth the visit. Once we were done with the tour we went for a little wander around Liverpool ONE, had a couple of Gin and Tonics and then headed back to the hotel to get ready for dinner.

Coop Kebab, Amaizeballs, Not Chicken Nuggets, Yard and Coop Liverpool
For dinner, we headed to Yard and Coop and it was probably one of the best meals I’ve ever had. I had the Coop Kebab, which was buttermilk chicken, pomegranate & cherry tomato salad on a warm flatbread, with minty sour cream and Korean sauce. I added a side of Amaizeballs, deep-fried sweetcorn balls with fresh chilli & coriander and a side of Not Chicken Nuggets, crumb-coated halloumi nuggets. I was quite literally food drunk after it. I couldn’t have been alcohol drunk as I’d only had two Gin and Tonics! I don’t think I’ve ever been so full in my life, but it was so worth it. As I was pretty much unable to function we headed back to the hotel to get some sleep.
Sunday 4th February
Spicy Baked Beans with Chorizo & Egg, Bills Liverpool
Sunday was match day! Liverpool vs, Tottenham. One of the main reasons we made the trip over. Kick off wasn’t until the afternoon so we ended up back in Bills for breakfast. This time I got the Spicy Baked Beans with Chorizo and Egg and it was super good. BF got the pancakes with bacon…again! After breakfast, we went back to the hotel to layer up ahead of the match. We got an Uber out to Anfield, collected our tickets and headed into the grounds. Grabbed a quick pint and a cookie (gotta have shnacks) and found our seats. The match ended 2-2 but it was an unreal atmosphere and a pretty good game to go with it.
After the match, we got an uber back to the Hotel. Despite the layers I was still freezing so I jumped in the shower to warm up and then got changed for dinner. It was our last night and as we had an early flight the next morning we decided to take it handy. We ended up back over to Albert Dock in a restaurant/bar/club place called Revolution. I’m not sure what it was; the drinks menu indicated a bar but they served food so also a restaurant but it was laid out and decorated like a club. Such a cool spot. I ended up getting a chicken burger and chips and another couple of G&T’s to finish off the trip! We then headed back to the hotel to finish packing before he headed home the next day.

Monday 5th February
Our taxi collected us at 6 am to bring us back to the airport. Within the hour we were through security and grabbing some pretty crappy airport breakfast. Another 30-minute flight and we were back home in cold but sunny Ireland.
If you are on the fence about visiting Liverpool I would 100% recommend, BF and I are big football fans but I’m already planning my next trip back so that I can hit up all the shops that are in Liverpool ONE and pay a visit to a few more cool restaurants and cocktail bars. Liverpool really does have something for everyone.
