Setting New Goals: 2018

Hello Everyone!

I hope you all had a great Christmas that was filled with happiness, family, food and drink! I hope that you got everything that you asked for. I hope that you ate as much as I did. I hope that you drank as much wine and G&T’s as I did! I hope that for a few days of the year you did not think of the number on the scales or how you missed a few days in the gym. I got more ‘Lose Weight with …’ emails into my inbox in the last few days than in the entire year! I moved them all to junk and continued to enjoy that last few days of the year.

Now that 2018 is only a few days away it’s the perfect time to start thinking about goals. Don’t wait until the 2nd of January to start setting goals as more than likely you will end up focusing on something unrealistic. Better to set them now, while still in the Christmas spirit than on a boring Tuesday in January.

Long-term vs Short-term

There are many different ways to set goals. Some people chose to set a few long-term goals, some set a number of short-term goals and other chose a bit of both. I tend to focus on choosing a few long-term goals which I then break down into smaller milestones. I also try to define goals for each important aspect of my life. These include career, personal, fitness and blogging.

Where to Record your Goals

You can write your goals down anywhere really, whatever works for you and fits into your lifestyle. If you live on your phone make use of the notes app to start jotting down your goals. If you prefer the feel of pen and paper then grab a notebook and start figuring out where 2018 is going to take you. If you’re reading this while travelling, at a coffee shop, out and about and are suddenly inspired with a goal then grab whatever is closest to you, a napkin, scrap of paper etc and jot it down. Keep it somewhere safe and transfer it to your notebook or phone when you get the chance. Make sure that wherever you write your goals down is somewhere that you remember. Even if you don’t check in on your goals throughout 2018 it will be nice this time next year to see what you have checked off the list. There are also loads and loads of planners out on the market that will help you get started with your goals and keep you on track throughout the year to ensure that you meet them before 2018 is finished. Two of the ones that I like are the happiness planner and the passion planner.

How to Achieve your Goals

It’s all well and good coming up with a load of ideas for goals that you want to achieve in 2018 if you don’t have any idea of how to reach them. For each of the goals that you set you will need you come up with a process to achieve that goal. Take a fitness goal as an example. Say you want to lose a couple of pounds or drop your BF%, how are you going to do it? Will you hire a personal trainer to get you on a training and nutrition plan? Will you take up running or maybe cycling? How much time per week can you dedicate to training or running or cycling? Are you going to cut down on sweet, chocolate, alcohol, fizzy drinks? These are just some ways that you could achieve that goal. You need to think about this for all of the goals that you set for 2018.

My Goals for 2018

Fitness

As this is mainly a fitness blog I 100% have ideas of what I want to achieve in 2018. This time last year I was 10KG lighter than I am now. I haven’t done my BF% in a while so I’m not sure where I stand there. In terms of how I look and feel there’s not too much of a difference. I’m slightly less lean than this time last year but I am stronger and fitter. So now I’m curious to see what is underneath my ‘winter coat’ and how lean I can get before the summer. We have a family holiday in September so I’ve given myself 8 months to cut the 10KG that I’ve put on and then another 2KG to get to the leanest I’ve been. I know that it won’t be easy but I’m feeling pretty motivated right now and with not a lot of trips and events planned over the next few months I think I can make a good bit of progress. 1.5KG a month is definitely a manageable weight loss/fat loss goal. I’m also hoping to get a DEXA scan done within the next month or two to see exactly what my body composition is like.

Blogging

2017 was definitely a bad year in terms of my blog. Overall I was feeling pretty uninspired and unmotivated to create new content. I was getting overwhelmed with trying to create content and forgot about why I started blogging in the first place, which was for my love of writing. I always said that if I wasn’t going to be a computer nerd I would have been a journalist or a writer. For 2018 my goals for my blog are to focus less on fitness and more on my everyday life. As some of you know I like to travel…a lot! And with my job, I get the opportunities to travel to a lot of places. My New York blog post was a big hit so I’m planning to do more posts like that about the different places that I visit in 2018. I’m also planning to do more with food on my blog, so more recipes, restaurant reviews etc. But don’t worry, there will still be a load of fitness posts as that is what I’m most passionate about! 2018 is going to be exciting for it’s Sophie!

Personal

My major personal goal for 2018 is to get my finances in order. I’ve been in full-time employment for 2 and a half years now and my college debt is still following me around. I really want to try to get as debt free as possible while working on building up my saving. In essence, I want to be a real person that doesn’t have to live paycheck to paycheck anymore. We’ve also made the adult decision to start saving for a mortgage. I’ve been renting for pretty much the last 6 years and over Christmas, I added up how much rent we’ve paid on the current house that we are living in and it genuinely made me feel ill to see how much money I have essentially been throwing away the last 2 years. I don’t even want to think about how much I’ve spent on rent overall since I left home! So we are hoping that in early 2019 we will be in a position to buy a house and I actually can’t contain the excitement!

    Nice Blog Sophie. It’s really not easy to lose weight. You can try working out on treadmills and exercise bikes for losing weight.
